Winekiki's green strategy

Protecting the environment is an important theme to Winekiki. We should “Be good to nature” if we want to keep it for our future generations. Treating the environment with respect is the least we can do when we think of all the good things that the environment gives to us. This is something that we do, not because of a trend, but because it is what we believe.

And how exactly did we arrive at this conclusion? A few years ago we were in the Beaujolais region in France, visiting friends whose house bordered directly on a vineyard. It was a beautiful day in May and we had the windows open to enjoy the fresh air and warm sunshine.  This wonderful moment came to an abrupt end when a farmer began spraying his vineyard - with pesticide. The smell was so overpowering that we had to close the window immediately.

This moment made us reflect upon the environmental sustainability of this type of treatment in the vinyards as a whole. Was this harmonious with nature? No way. Can the nutrients in the soil be preserved? Probably not. And what about the residue in the wine? That's a long term effect.

Winkiki’s wines are often certified organic or have organic standards. So what are organic standards? Some wine makers produce their wine out of conviction in accordance with organic standards, but don't go through the elaborate process of certification.  Others operate their vineyards in accordance with organic standards, but still want to reserve certain degrees of freedom in the cellar (i.e. A slightly elevated sulfurization).

Yes, organic and biodynamic wines are usually more expensive than conventional wines because their production is more labor intensive, they produce smaller quantities and incur additional costs or fees for inspections and certification licensing.

Winekiki is also striving for an ecological approach. Our wine is shipped in boxes that are mainly made from renewable resources and we use a CO2-neutral transport.

We believe that energy and sustainability are important. Is Winekiki perfect? Maybe not, but our goal gives us a positive direction to strive for, so when we are out in a wine region we can open the windows to enjoy the fresh air and warm sunlight….And we want that you can, too.
